Just a few miles east of Hereford, the villages of Lugwardine and Bartestree offer some of the most peaceful walking routes in the county. Rolling farmland, quiet lanes, old estates and river views combine to create an ideal countryside ramble. Best of all, the route includes a rewarding stop at the historic The Crown and Anchor — a classic village pub that feels tailor-made for walkers. We love to welcome visitors from across the World exploring Hereford.

Whether you’re looking for a gentle afternoon stroll or a longer countryside circuit, this East Hereford walk blends scenery, history and a traditional pub finish.

Starting the Walk: Lugwardine Village

Begin your walk in the quiet village of Lugwardine, situated around three miles east of Hereford. The village sits close to the River Lugg and has roots stretching back to the Domesday Book, its name thought to mean “homestead on the River Lugg.”

From the village centre, you’ll find several public footpaths leading out into open farmland and woodland. One pleasant route heads North-East along field paths and hedgerows, offering wide views across the Herefordshire countryside.

Expect gently rolling fields, birdsong, and the occasional glimpse of traditional black-and-white Herefordshire farmhouses.

Across Fields Towards Bartestree

Continue the walk toward Bartestree along a mixture of bridleways and quiet country lanes. The landscape here is classic Herefordshire: pasture fields, old orchards, and pockets of woodland.

As you approach the edge of the village, you may pass near historic estates such as Hagley Park, an early 19th Century house set within landscaped parkland.

Bartestree itself is a small rural village with a relaxed pace of life. From here, walkers can loop back toward Lugwardine using local footpaths that cut through farmland and along quiet country roads.

The route forms a gentle circular walk of roughly 4–6 miles depending on the paths chosen.

A Perfect Pub Stop: Right here at The Crown and Anchor

No countryside walk is complete without a proper pub stop, and Lugwardine delivers with us here at The Crown and Anchor.

Dating back to the 17th century, this Grade II listed black and white timber framed Inn is a traditional Herefordshire village pub with plenty of character.

Inside, you’ll find cosy bars and a large open fireplace, making it especially welcoming in cooler months. Outside there’s a terrace and a spacious beer garden, perfect for sunny post-walk refreshments.

We serve home cooked food using locally sourced ingredients along with traditional ales, making it a popular stop for both locals and visiting walkers.

After a few miles exploring the countryside, a pint and a hearty meal here with us feels particularly well earned. You'll always get a warm welcome here at The Crown and Anchor Lugwardine.
